There are many things to do in Aspen from skiing to eating. However, these are things that you must do in Aspen Colorado. I grew up in Aspen Colorado and know the ins and outs of this ski town. In the summer, there are certain things on my list that I tell visitors, friends, and/or clients that they must do while visiting Aspen Colorado.
The first is to go to Maroon Bells, the most photographed peaks in North America. If you are in shape, biking up to Maroon Bells is a unique experience. It is about 12 miles going up a paved road. On the way down, it is all down hill. The lake with the majestic Maroon Bell peaks is breath taking. If you feel like getting an even closer view of the Maroon Bells, I recommend hiking the Crater Lake trail that takes you to the base of the Maroon Bells peaks. This hike is pretty gentle and takes about an hour each way. Eating a picnic lunch at Crater Lake is a real highlight of the hike.
You can experience Maroon Bells in the winter by renting snowmobiles at T-Lazy Seven Ranch. In the summer, there are certain hiking trails that are a must to experience in Aspen Colorado. Right outside of town, is Sunny Side Trail. Sunny Side Trail is uphill but has views of the town of Aspen and surrounding mountains that is hard to beat.
You can easily spend all day on this trail if you do the whole trail starting at the trail head above the Rio Grand Park (on the west side of town) and hiking all the way across the top of Red Mountain and coming down and ending up at the bottom of Smuggler Mountain. There are two hikes up Castle Creek that I really enjoy. American Lake and Cathedral Lake that can each take two to three hours each way depending on your conditioning. Make sure to pack a lunch to enjoy at the lake. Both these hikes are up hill to the lake and then back down. Both these hikes are unique and are by no ways the same.
The views are vastly different and neither hike should be missed. After skiing, après ski at the Ajax grill at the base of Aspen Mountain, is a must to people watch.
At night, Matsuhisa restaurant (known as Nobu) is a must for enjoying the best sushi and non-seafood specialties Aspen has to offer. In the winter, a must for all skiers that visit Aspen Colorado, is to head over to Snowmass Village Colorado (just 12 miles from Aspen). Snowmass mountain is known as a family mountain and has something for everyone. It is four times the size than Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. Over 50% of its slopes are intermediate terrain that are wide open and are refreshing after skiing narrow slopes that are common at most ski areas. Also, Snowmass is going through a rebirth with the New Snowmass Base Village at the bottom of the ski area that will add a new commercial mall, new condos, and a new luxury full service Viceroy hotel with spa and conference facilities.
