Rifle in the past has been the place for farmers and ranchers to live. It was also the least expensive place to live for people working up valley in Glenwood Spring, Carbondale, Basalt, and Aspen. Rifle has had commercial development off Interstate 70 for some time. In 2003, Rifle got a Super Wal-Mart and a new City Market grocery store which has attracted more restaurants and businesses in the area.
Rifle has beautiful views of mesas and the Colorado River and has a milder winter climate. Energy companies have been moving in and have turned Rifle more into an energy town.
There are more no vacancy rates for rentals, motels, and other housing. Developers are able to meet the ever increasing demand for housing in the area because of the current slow down in the enconomy. However, the long term housing and real estate appreciation looks outstanding for the area.
