Aspen Times History

Aspen Times was first called Aspen Weekly Times and was first published April 23, 1881. Local Aspen silver miners wanted news about the outside world. The first owner was D.H. Waite & Co. that later sold the newspaper in 1885 to B. Clark Wheeler. Soon after, Wheeler published the paper daily. Wheeler knew how to promote and was involved in other businesses. Wheeler changed the name of the town from Ute City to Aspen in 1880. After the U.S. got off the silver standard in the 1890’s the population of Aspen dropped significantly and the paper went back to a weekly publication only. It was not until 1988 that the Aspen Times again became a daily newspaper.
