In the 1890’s, Aspen got its first mode of public transportation with two rail lines coming right into downtown Aspen (One from Glenwood Springs and the other from Leadville). In the early 1920’s, Aspen saw the first car come to Aspen. In the 1950’s, Aspen saw the first planes coming into Aspen. Since then, it has gotten easier to get in and out of Aspen by air transportion. Now, we have many air transportation and ground transportation options (see below). Denver has gotten more competition with discount airlines. Southwest is adding flights from around the country. Frontier is also expanding its flights in and out of Denver.

220 miles from Aspen/Snowmass, visitors can also choose to fly into Denver International (DIA) and then take ground transportation to reach Aspen/Snowmass. More than 400 flights are offered into DIA from over 80 cities on 14 airlines, plus daily nonstop service from London/Gatwick on British Airways and daily nonstop service from Frankfurt on Lufthansa.

ASPEN/PITKIN COUNTY AIRPORT (ASE): Located just three miles from Aspen and six miles from Snowmass Village, the Aspen airport is the most conveniently located winter resort in the world. Nearly 150 flights per week ensure connections from points across the globe.
Now three airlines offer direct service to Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE):
Frontier: is offering turbo prop service by its Lynx subsidiary.
American Airlines: has just anounced direct flights daily this winter from Dallas/ Fort Worth and Los Angeles. Aspen will have extended its runway by 1,000 sq. ft. by winter 2011-2012 inviting larger jets to land.
United Express: CRJ-700 regional jet service (66 seats including First Class and Economy Plus) and Dash 8-200 (37 seats) operated by Mesa (used for some DEN-ASE flights only).:
- Frequent connecting service from Denver, nonstop jet service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago/O’Hare
CONNECTING SERVICE: Perfectly timed connections to Aspen will be available throughout the day from nearly 200 cities throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Rim.
EAGLE COUNTY REGIONAL AIRPORT (EGE): Located 70 miles from Aspen/Snowmass. Serviced by six airlines with nonstop connecting flights from 13 cities during the winter, and connecting service from cities throughout North America and the world.
757 aircraft hold between 176-190 passengers. Some flights departing EGE have weight restrictions, which may decrease the total number of passengers that can depart from EGE.
Service into Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is provided by six major airlines:
American Airlines: Seasonal nonstop 757 (176 seats) jet service from five cities, with up to four flights daily from Dallas/Ft. Worth; two flights daily from Chicago/O’Hare; daily service from Newark International; and Saturday service from New York/La Guardia and Miami.
Continental Airlines: Seasonal daily nonstop 757 service (183 seats) from Houston‘s George Bush International Airport (formerly Houston Inter-Continental), in addition to nonstop service from Newark International.
Delta Air Lines: Daily nonstop 757 service (180 seats) from Atlanta to Eagle County Airport beginning mid-December and runs through early April, plus Saturday nonstop service from Cincinnati.
Northwest Airlines: Seasonal daily 757 (194 seats) nonstop service from Minneapolis/St Paul.
United Airlines/United Express: Daily connecting flights from Denver to Eagle on the CRJ-700 (70 seats) jet service.
U.S. Airways: Weekend nonstop jet service from Charlotte, NC, and Philadelphia, PA.
