They always say the best things in life are free. Aspen and Snowmass does not disappoint with its natural beauty that one can enjoy for free. There are numerous hikes around Aspen and Snowmass and they are all free. A local favorite is the Smuggler trail. This trail or road starts on the east end of Aspen and goes up Smuggler Road. It offers dramatic views of Aspen below and has a platform overlooking Aspen and surrounding mountains when you reach the top. Many people mountain bike this and take a single track down to Hunter Creek.
Aspen Trees- Aspen Colorado
In Snowmass the favorite hike would have to be the Rim Trail. This too offers dramatic views of Snowmass and the ski area. Many people mountain bike this as well. For the ultimate mountain bike trail you can start in Snowmass and end up in Aspen via the Government Trail. This is a challenging trail even for some locals.
It is hard to imagine that there is live music in Aspen and Snowmass that can still be heard for free. The Aspen Music Tent in the summer offers free concerts outside on the lawn area. Snowmass Village offers free concerts every Thursday in the summer.
What else can you enjoy for free in Aspen? You can drive up Independence Pass and see the old historic ghost town of Independence. You can also drive up Castle Creek and see the old historic ghost town of Ashcroft. Both of these towns were booming during the silver boom in the end of the nineteenth century.
