Some of the best things in life are free. It is hard to imagine anything free in this ritzy town in the winter. However, there are over 120 kilometers of continuous cross country ski trails from Aspen to Snowmass that are free to use and enjoy. The trails go from Aspen to Snowmass and the trail is scenic and beautiful and will not disappoint. It is easier to start in Snowmass because after the one steep hill above Two Creeks, the trail is then all downhill to Aspen.
X-Country Skiing- Aspen to Snowmass Colorado
There are other great trails that you can cross country ski on that are separate from the 120 kilometers mentioned above. One maintained trail that I really enjoy is out by North Star Preserve that is on the east end of town. Another one that can be fun is around difficult campground at the base of Independence Pass in Aspen. I also enjoy cross country skiing up to Lenado that is west of Aspen.
Snowshoeing around Aspen and Snowmass is also very popular and free. One can snowshoe up Aspen Mountain at 6 AM to 7 AM and ride the Aspen Mountain Gondola down for free. Snowshoer’s can climb up Buttermilk Mountain all day and take down the Summit Express chairlift for free. All of these free activities can be enhanced by packing a lunch and enjoying it by taking a break to break up the activity. The free views will not disappoint you.
