Ghost towns around Aspen Colorado

There are many ghost towns around Aspen Colorado that became boom towns because of the Silver Boom back in the 1890’s. They first started out as small mining camps and quickly became booming towns. Ashcroft is about 14 miles from Aspen Colorado and is located by going back 13 miles in to the Castle Creek Valley. Ashcroft Colorado had a population of over 5,000 men at one time and just around a dozen or so women. You can tour the remnants from this town for free. They tried to restore the remaining building a little bit back in the 1980’s.

The next ghost town near Aspen Colorado is located on top of Independence Pass and is called the town of Independence Colorado. It was in the thousands of people during its height. It died out with the price of silver crashing in the late 1890’s. There is a great road you can walk along the mountain and see the remnants of the town all the way up the hill side. It sold to a preservation land trust in the 1990’s and will be preserved from further development.

The next closest ghost town to Aspen Colorado would be the town of Ruby Colorado. This ghost town is located off of Independence Pass by taking Lincoln Road past Grizzly Reservoir all the way to Ruby. Once off Independence Pass the road is all dirt to Ruby and a four wheel drive car is recommended. There are remnants of this town practically right on the road. The town was bought up by a person in the 1980’s and the owner has erected some nice cabins and homes.

The last ghost town near Aspen Colorado is called Crystal Colorado. You can get there by car through Marble Colorado. You can drive to the trail head in a four wheel drive and then walk to Crystal. There is a famous old mill that was built over a water fall that is a famous Colorado photo. It is questionable how much longer the mill will stand the test of time.
