High altitude effects people differently. However, Aspen is at 7,960 ft. above sea level and Snowmass Village is way over 8,000 ft. above sea level. There is less humidity and oxygen than at sea level. The common symptoms when visiting can include: headache, restlessness, fatigue, insomnia, breathlessness, and sometimes nausea. Some rare cases cause coughing and shortness of breath requiring medical treatment.
However, the good news is we can avoid the effects of high altitude by first and foremost drinking plenty of water. Second, taking a few aspirin daily to thin out your blood. It is also good to get plenty of fresh air.
The biggest things to avoid are over exertion the first or second day in Aspen or Snowmass. Too much alcohol and not enough water. Drinking to much caffeine.
The next thing to watch out for is the intensity of the sun in Aspen or Snowmass. The sun is even more intense in the spring time when it reflects off the snow. It is important to use at least a 15 SPF sun block on your face and protect your lips with lip balm with sun block too. It is also important to protect your eyes with goggles or sunglasses.
