How exciting has it been since a mammoth was discovered in Snowmass Village on October 14, 2010? Very exciting for what is considered one of the biggest finds in North America. Mammoth bones were discovered by the Snowmass Water District while excavating at Ziegler reservoir above Snowmass Village. What is unique about the find is that the bones have been so well preserved that they have not turned to fossils.
Denver Museum of Nature and Science have taken possession of 503 bones, tusks and teeth from the Ziegler Reservoir. It has made a deal with the Town of Snowmass Village and the Snowmass Water District to provide the town with a cast of the mammoth bones.
The treasures the scientists have found so far are: five or more mastodons, a bison skull with 7 foot horn span, a couple of Columbian mammoths, a giant Jefferson ground sloth (first in the state), complete deer with antlers, salamanders, snails, two more bison. The local papers have called it a “Prehistoric Zoo.” The Columbian Mammoth had 14 foot spiraled tusks, was 13 feet tall at the shoulder, and weighed up to 10 tons.
The find is now estimated to span 12,000 to 120,000 years with the oldest layer of the digs to be at least 43,500 years old, but could be much older. It is now thought that the ancient glacial lake formed over 130,000 years ago.
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science are putting the site to bed for the winter and hope to excavate again in the spring for six to eight weeks.
